BIOL 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Intron, Meiosis, Mitosis
Document Summary
Holds newest trna carrying the next amino acid to be added to the chain. Brings together mrna, first amino acid and 2 subunits of ribosome. Mrna cap and tails help attach and identify. Mrna binds to small ribosomal subunit then special trna binds to start codon. Ribosome moves along mrna reading it in groups of 3 (codons) trna carries amino acid to mrna/ribosome and amino acid is added to chain. Aamino acid chain detaches from ribosome and fold into 3-d shape. Determine when and how much protein a gene makes. Determine amino acid sequence of the encoded protein. Transcripts are remodeled before leaving and moving into cytoplasm/ribosome. Removes introns (noncoding) and attaching exons (coding) together through splicing to form mrna. May be spliced together in a different combination than original. Can receive different outcomes from the same set. We can see what genes are turned on by looking at mrna not dna because it contains noncoding introns.
