Deviance as a social construct: we make rules which constitutes deviance, and apply those rules to particular ppl and label them as outsiders. Deviance not as a quality of the act a person commits, but rather as a consequence of the application. Labeling theory- the view of deviance in which being labeled as deviant leads a person to internalize the label and engage in deviant behavior: self fulfilling prophecy. Labeling hype (rios: confirmation bias exist when we label someone as deviant, labeling not only generate criminality; it also perpetuates criminalization. Criminalization- the process by which behaviors and individuals are transformed into crime and criminals: starts early (before boys commit any serious crimes) Code of the street: anderson: appearing aggressive and willing to commit violence is a self- defense process; don"t snitch. Preemptively attacking an enemy to prevent future victimization: police involved in magnifying code of the street, prevents over policing- under policing paradox.
