SOC 302 Lecture 9: Stratification
Document Summary
I. what is strati cation: de nition: the unequal distribution of the good things in life. The degree of strati cation varies signi cantly: dimensions of strati cation: as a general rule, they tend to vary together. As a general rule, people who have a lot of income and wealth tend to have a lot of prestige and power. Prestige is attached to the status, then to the implication to the people who ll those respected statuses: material resources, income: the money that people receive from various sources (including, but not restricted to, their jobs. ) We tend to look up to people who live in nice homes, drive nice cars; we look down on people who live modestly and drive junkers; etc. The things that we buy become means in which we differentiate ourselves fro mother people (within the context of a consumer society, the things that we buy take on meanings/symbolic value).
