A single worker who had a high school diploma (or less) could support a family in a middle-class lifestyle. Pay then was able to support a middle-class lifestyle with only one person working. The economy was grwoing and there were enough middle-income jobs that allowed people who were born in low-income circumstances to move their family up to middle class. Gender discrimination was rampant (as well as race): division of labor (taylorism) A highly specialized division of labor is known as an assembly line. (everyone had their own job: alienation. People being mentally separated from their work (as well as from the products of their work) Caused largely by the highly specialized division of labor (because you are doing the same one thing for a long period of time: implied contract between employers and employees (fordism) Everybody shares in the gains and when the company takes a hit as well.
