Document Summary
Neoformalist film scholars, historians, and professors who said that: Mise en sc ne comes from the theater, but in film refers to arrangement within a shot. There are four elements to mise en sc ne: Sets may be real or constructed; they can overwhelm actors, shape the story, and emphasize authenticity. Costumes can play a causal role or they can help with characterization. Ho(cid:449) they"re dressed tells (cid:449)ho they are, their (cid:271)ehaviors, etc. Lighting shows us the action, creates the overall composition, guides our attention, and articulates tension. Four aspects of lighting: quality, direction, source, color. High-key lighting aims for low contrast, while low-key lighting aims for higher contrast. Three-point lighting: key light, back/hair light, and side/fill light. Key light is the pri(cid:373)ary light, positio(cid:374)ed (cid:271)ehi(cid:374)d the i(cid:374)ter(cid:448)ie(cid:449)er"s shoulder opposite the (cid:272)a(cid:373)era to illu(cid:373)i(cid:374)ate the su(cid:271)je(cid:272)t"s fa(cid:272)e. Back/hair light illuminates the spa(cid:272)e (cid:271)ehi(cid:374)d the su(cid:271)je(cid:272)t"s head so he or she stands out from the background.
