PSY 364 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Social Emotions
Document Summary
Clarification - listening for accuracy (only one that is a question) Helper invites client to elaborate on vague, ambiguous, or implied message. Used to make client"s message explicit and to confirm the accuracy of helper perceptions of the message. Don"t lead or ask about a new topic or incorporate your perspective yet (influencing) Starts with, do you mean that or are you saying that along with repetition or rephrasing of all or part of client"s previous message. Identify vague or confusing parts of a message that need to be checked out for accuracy or elaboration. Construct the clarification with queries such as could you describe? , could you clarify? , or are you saying? . Deliver clarification as question (rather than statement) If making it like a statement - client won"t respond in a way to improve your understanding. Go on dynamically throughout entire interaction with client (including clarification)
