PHL 317K Lecture 2: Hume
Document Summary
He"s using the word subjective to mean each of us individually experiences art for ourselves. He"s suggesting art is something you apply emotions to. Hume talks a lot about morality and also applies emotion to this. He judges art based on whether or not the art excites an emotional reaction. Essentially trying to make sure this is not just a fad. Not reliable because there will be outliers of people who don"t agree w the general opinion. Other pieces of art aren"t permitted the time necessary to stand the test of time. Other people are told it"s an acquired taste. Other people are told certain pieces of art are great (e. g. shakespeare is a great artist) Suitability of the work for attaining its end. Inappropriate state of mind is like if you go when you"re hungry or have to pee really badly. People with good sense are always trusted more than others. Many times prejudice narrows anyone"s scope of vision.
