Day 14 2/11/16: ch 7 incomplete history of sport and american nationalism. How sports have been used (overtly or less so) to define our identity as americans or to the rest of the world. British guy said it came from the england sport of rounders vs. spalding says it was born on american soil. Event: baseball is attributed to be invented in america by abner doubleday (civil war hero) Not true even though the commission to investigate said it was the evidence was falsified. Symbolism: although a myth, helps unite a nation of immigrants around a new sporting identity. Cultural imperialism: the culture of the powerful influencing the culture of the less powerful. The irony: baseball represent resistance toward british culture, yet historians cite baseball as a tool later used to promote american cultural imperialism. But baseball probably did come from rounders (british game) Event: jesse owen and several african american athletes earn medals in berlin olympic.
