Day 12 19/10/16: Ch 6 Community Development more
Sport Can prove value to a community (no matter where)
Sport provides a platform for delivering services
Those services help develop social skills and social networks
These skills and networks can be leveraged to support disadvantaged groups or to
address social issues
Sport as mechanisms for Community Development
4 Approaches
1. Top Down: Organized and developed outside the community and then dropped
into place (EX: NFL play 60)
2. Bottom Up: Conceived, organized, and delivered from within community (EX:
Boneshaker - Austin developed for Austin community)
3. Sport-Plus: Sport delivery is the main goal; additional benefits secondary (EX:
little league)
4. Plus-Sport: Development outcomes primary goal; sport is ‘hook’ or get people
there (EX: Midnight Basketball, runs at night when crime/poor behavior would
happen but gets them to play basketball then)
When successfully executed sport can provide desirable community development
outcomes
Social Capital: access to social resources through network
Identity / Citizenship: Take pride in being part of a community
Social Inclusion: Integration and calculating newcomers
Ex: roller derby clip
Sport may harm communities if not managed well
Negative use of social capital reduces opportunities for other who may be more
deserving (EX: not on the travel team so you won't get the same level of social capital)
Intense rivalries divide neighborhood with a community
Club or membership exclude certain community members and even structurally
(genders, races, socioeconomic status) (EX: country club style)
Sport is not inherently good or bad, but how its management/impanate can lead to a range of
positive or negative social and community outcomes SPORT IS NEUTRAL
Case Study - I 9 Sports
Program Assessment: assessed the shortcomings of the competitors in the market and
created a different blueprint for the criteria that should be used to develop a youth sports
program (Ex: skill not winning based)
Thus tailor the design to be different and have different outcomes
serves different market or meets needs that are not otherwise met
