Day 11 17/10/16: Ch 6 Sport for Community Development
Community
● What is it?
○ Geographic space (city)
○ Geographic subspace (neighborhood)
○ Group with shared interest (club)
● Community development: physical or social change and can occur either intentionally or
residually
● Goal: Creating behavior and action which contribute to the betterment of the community
by taking on social issues (decrease poverty/crime and increase safety)
○ Impact the community through design and implementation that helps us do that
● Community Development Organisation function to…
○ Provide for needs of children and adults
○ Fairly allocate goods and services
○ Foster relationships that promote cultural development, citizenship, and political
will (this is where sports fit in)
Community Sport in the US
● Non Profit / Sport Organization (YMCA, JCC, Boys and Girls Club)
● Municipal Parks and Recreation (City of Austin, Dunbar Community Center)
● School Sports (High School football)
● Clubs (AAA USA, travel clubs)
Community Sport Elsewhere (NOT US)
● Points of confusion (similar terms) but mean very different things
○ Shared origins but different trajectories
● Other countries the government run lotteries help fund sport organizations
● Vocab that are different
○ Clubs
■ USA: elite pay for play travel teams for the best / wealthiest players
■ Europe: community based sport and social organisation for all ages
○ School Sports
■ USA: elite interscholastic teams (try out and make team, tournament style
against other teams)
■ Europe: inclusive sport for all (intramural style)
○ Funding
■ USA: local taxes and fees
■ Europe: local taxes and fees and national lottery

■ USA: not part of coordinated system
