Sound"s neglect in film: difficult to analyze, we are more familiar with the visual elements importance of sound in film. Diegetic sound can be on or off screen depending on where the source is. Characters in the film can hear this sound: example: character"s voices or sounds made by objects in the story, underscoring (non-diegetic)- sound that"s source is neither visible nor implied. Character"s usually cannot hear this type of sound. Examples: narrator"s commentary or mood music: original- for the movie only, composite- groups of songs already made (ex. Guardians of the galaxy: combination, filmmakers must carefully choose right music, as well as right length and placement of this music, sound effects/natural sound. Natural sound: is the real sound of an object or environment, but often times these sounds are edited for a more dramatic effect. Sound effects: are the result of this sound editing.
