Document Summary

Lecture 5: human development and embryonic stem cells. Female gamete (egg) n + male gamete (sperm) n fertilization diploid offspring contains homologous pair of chromosomes (zygote 2n) 2-cell blastomere 4-cell blastomere 8 cell blastomere 8 cell compacted blastomere 16 cell morula blastocyst. In humans, blastocysts form 4-5 days after fertilization and consist of 200-300 cells. After 8-9 days, blastocysts implant on the wall of the uterus. Germ cells contain one set of chromosomes while somatic cells have two. Germ cells as able to produce and reproduce through meiosis while somatic cells. Inner cell mass differentiates into three germ layers: ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm (cid:2) (cid:2) (cid:2) (cid:2) (cid:2) (cid:2) (cid:2) reproduce through mitosis. Germ cells are for reproduction while somatic cells are for organs, bones, tissues. Totipotent: differentiate into any embryonic or extra-embryonic tissue. Multipotent: differentiate into a limited number of related cell types. Unipotent: differentiate into only one cell type.
