Looking at someone"s mate doesn"t necessarily tell you about their mate preferences. Buss 1989: 37 cultural study about mate preferences. Women financial prospects more than men cross-culturally, but how much they care can vary across cultures. Does not appear to be based on women having less direct access to resources. Women who are wealthier put a higher value on financial prospects. Poor men do not seek resources in mates. Social status- a universal cue of control over resources (more food, territory, subordinates, etc. )
