Document Summary

Consistency across time, not situations: ex: trump will be same over time, but not during a specific debate, personality changes over time (can"t just stop at age 6) Don"t have that level of predictability in personality. Within a small span of time (i. e. 50 meter swim race), it could be anyone larger span of time (i. e. 800 m swim race. Katie l. definitely won) real personality comes out. Criterion for what counts as being consistent can change: ex: person who is physically aggressive on playing field won"t necessarily be physically aggressive in the classroom. Consistent only for certain traits: markus (1977): schematic for traits (notice & care about instances of a certain trait ex: someone wants to be punctual for all situations, some more consistent than others. High self-monitors = do what the situation calls for. Consistency itself might be a trait (some people may want to do what"s consistent across a certain trait: don"t usually find consistency across situations.
