Document Summary

Children are assumed to be least influenced by social forces. How children are dressed and how they are treated by teachers suggests that this is a determinant of gender. Socialization: how people learn to be a member of a group, lifelong process (new environment, have to learn new skills/behaviours) Pick up meanings that are embedded in social practices over time and then they adopt a certain behaviour and identity over time. Child"s sex categorization at birth determines a different upbringing -> different interests/ education. If you treat boys and girls differently, they will be different. If children develop identities, they must be gendered identities. It"s not saying that either gender is incapable of doing a certain thing, it"s more about nurture. Open to change if it"s a natural change//allows for variation. It"s easy to see even if adults are not aware that they treat boys and girls differently.
