Document Summary

Invasive system used to provide quantitative information about vascular capacity, blood volume, pump effectiveness, and tissue perfusion. Indications: ards, cardiac tamponade, severe shock states, high risk patients in periop fluid imbalance, major burn/trauma, monitor circulatory syndromes (heart failure, mvr) Contraindications: coagulopathy, mechanical tricuspid or pulmonic valve, endocarditis, endocardial pacemaker, right heart mass. Flow directed catheter used to measure pulmonary artery pressures. Standard size is 7. 5 french, 43 inches/110cm long. Typically has 5 lumens: blue: cvp. Another pressure line to see pulmonary artery tracing. Arterial: red: monitors body temperature, white: fluids, meds, etc go through this, pcwp: wedge pressure, inflated balloon within catheter via syringe. Central line that measure pressures inside the heart. Helps to determine the cause of cardiac output. Pressure transducer set up: assemble all components if not already done. Attach flush device to iv tubing and transducer. Attach transducer to pressure tubing to via 3 way stopcock. Zero the 3 stopcocks to the level of phlebostatic axis.
