Document Summary

Why are infants vulnerable to infectious disease: immune system: not mature at birth, passively immunity: from mother. Protection is limited and fades after birth: immunizations: have not received yet, so protection is incomplete. How is a communicable disease spread: direct transmission: person to person to a person; through vector to a person, indirect transmission: contaminated object or surface. What are 3 factors necessary for a communicable disease to occurrence: infective agent/pathogen, effective means of transmission, susceptible host. Toxic appearance- lethargy, poor perfusion, changes in respiratory pattern. Risk for deficient fluid volume- may be decreased intake or decreased output. Where is the child with infectious disease: most children can be cared for at home. Pediatric immunizations & infectious disease and immunology: isolation precautions. How do we treat the child with an infectious disease: treat the fever. Involve the parents in care of the child. Prevent tick bite- if going to be out, wear long pants and long sleeves.
