NURS 371 Lecture 36: NeuroPart2
Document Summary
Chronic, progressive, degenerative autoimmune disorder that has development of plaque in the white matter, damaging the myelin sheath. Trigger factors: virus, infection, fatigue, overexertion. Manifestations- vague & nonspecific: vision impairment- changes in peripheral vision. Diplopia: numbing/tingling in of limbs & skin (paresthesias, difficulty with walking, weakness & exhaustion, memory loss, impaired judgement, depression, urinary & bowel complications- constipation, fecal incontinence, nocturia, progressive deterioration with repeater exacerbations. Diagnostics: mri gold standard for dx and progression monitoring, evoked potentials: show a delay bc decreased nerve conduction. Treatments: goal: help to prevent relapses or decrease severity, medications: Disease modifying drugs: interferon beta 1a and 1b- suppresses immune function but. Nursing diagnosis & interventions helps with relapses. Glatiramer acetate: fatigue & activity intolerance- promote rest periods, disturbed sensory perception, imbalanced nutrition: less than body requirements, aspiration risk- may need thickener for liquid, safety- pt and ot, impaired physical mobility, impaired urinary elimination. 1: neurogenic bladder- conduction between brain and bladder does not work properly.
