BIOL 244 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Gram Staining, Zygospore, Dinoflagellate
Document Summary
Doomain bacteria (prokaryotic organisms: proteobacteria (mostly gram-negative bacteria) (escherichia, gram-positive bacteria (bacillus, spirochetes (spirillum, cyanobacteria, or the autotrophic: blue-green bacteria (anabaena) Domain eukarya (eukaryotic organism, including the protists, fungi, plants, and animals) One domain of living things is called archaea. The archaea have a number of unique characteristics with respect to their cell walls and metabolism. Many are what we call extremophiles: extremophiles live in stressful environments of high temperature (thermophiles), saltiness (halophiles), or low oxygen. The eubacteria or bacteria are second domain of life. A streptococcus thus is a chain of spherical-shaped bacteria. The blue-green bacteria or cyanobacteria the cyanobacteria are prokaryotic organisms that are autotrophs (capable of photosynthesis). The blue-green bacteria grow in many different environments: marine, freshwater, and moist soils. Some species are endosymbionts (live inside other unicellular organisms or inside the other cells) of lichens, plants, and various protists.
