SOC 1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Erving Goffman, Woodworking, Symbolic Interactionism
Document Summary
What keeps society moving is groups that have competing interests. Means of production - anything that could create more wealth; money, property, factories, other types of business . Owners - owned businesses, took away from workers to make a profit. Workers - trade their labor for wage. Alienating people from themselves and the products they produce. Factory workers don"t have a deep knowledge of woodworking. It"s possible that these folks lose the sense of identity connected to their work, thus alienated from themselves and the products they produce . Especially when you are trying to explain all other aspects of society. Can"t explain why some things stay the same. Lookout for concerns about inequality, exploitation, power. Assume that there is an unequal power dynamic. Conflict theorists try to tease out the conflict between two groups. What you"re missing is an understanding of how people themselves create meaning.
