PSY 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Parsing, Action Potential, Myelin
Document Summary
Try to decompose at least three processes necessary to engage in that activity e. g. reading. The brain is responsible for many processes (sensation, perception, learning, attention, memory, language) Almost everything we do, the brain is involved. Neural transmission: electrochemical communication within and between neurons and the final destination. *the larger the myelin the faster it goes. Myelinated v. unmyelinated e. g. sports car v. broke down car. The brain has two hemispheres: left and right. Two hemispheres usually work together- they communicate through the corpus callosum. Corpus callosum: brand of nerves that connects the two hemispheres. What happens when the corpus callosum is cut? (e. g. in order to treat epilepsy) How the brain works: left v. right hemispheres. Left hemisphere: verbal processing such as language, speech, reading, and writing. Right hemisphere: nonverbal processing such as that required by spatial, musical, and visual recognition task. Understanding the meaning of words requires language centers in the left hemisphere.
