Drugs - any substances that modify mind and/or body functioning. Tylenol, coffee (not typically seen as socially deviant, therefore not a primary focus in this class) Psychoactive drugs or substances - drug compounds that affect the central nervous system and alter consciousness and/or perceptions. Distinction between drugs that are legal (licit) and illegal (illicit) Have to be prescribed and take it as prescribed. Depends on time and place (some states allow recreational or medicinal marijuana use so long as certain conditions have been met) Using someone else"s prescription medication is illegal and has a negative connotation. ***have to consider time, place, and methods of use. Drug abuse - the habitual taking or misuse of addictive or illegal drugs. Doesn"t mean that someone is an addict! Drug addiction - chronic, often relapsing brain disease that causes compulsive drug seeking. Initial use is typically a voluntary decision; over time, brain changes impede self control.
