Marcus Garvey: Look for me in the Whirlwind
Debunks the idea that God not only forsaken blacks by having them of a dark color and
thus being inferior, but also points out that All people were created by Him thus be must be
black in a sense.
o Color is nothing but a
construct that we attached privilege to.
He says “God sees no color”
Return to Africa: Garvey
knows that logically, there are people
that do not want nor can use Africa’s
land.
o Africa belongs to Africans,
and thus should be for their use.
o Asks for a Unites States of
Africa to solidify this black identity
o There cannot be people
without a nation; blacks are of America, but they are of African descent
The US does not and is unwilling to provide blacks with a sense of identity
that they need
Liberation through intelligence and use of thoughts:
1. Creates this notion that chains are not what keep people captive. That is just a way to
oppress one physically
Real oppression comes in controlling every aspect of one’s life. But yet much like
Douglass when he confronted Covey, slavery is a concept that people internalized
that must be broken if one truly wants to be free
“So give us credit for being able to use our minds. And once people are in concept of themselves;
determined to use their minds you do not know to what extent they can go. Liberate the minds of
men and ultimately you will liberate the bodies of men…I am a man and demand a man’s chance
and a man’s treatment in this world.”
The opportunity for blacks to rise to their full potential, but to rise not only as a
community, but also as a nation alongside whites.
Both groups must learn to rise together
Necessary Changes:
1. Blacks must learn to love and accept themselves for who they are and what they look like.
That is to take pride in who they are as a person but also where they come from
“I shall teach the black man to see beauty in his own kind and stop bleaching his skin and otherwise
looking like what he’s not.”
He says this as a response to stop assimilating to white ways; these are the attitudes
that demonstrate shame in who they are, but also stimulate these notions of white
supremacy
These must die if blacks are to progress
“WE ARE GOING TO EMANCIPATE
OURSELVES FROM MENTAL SLAVERY
BECAUSE WHILST OTHER MIGHT FREE THE
BODY, NONE BUT OURSELVES CAN FREE
THE MIND… THE MAN WHO IS NOT ABLE TO
DEVELOP AND USE HIS MIND IS BOUND TO
BE THE SLAVE OF THE OTHER MAN WHO
USES HIS MIND”
