Goals of sex research are to understand, predict, and change sexual behavior. Uses the scientific method, which is intended to be. Objective- outcome should not be influenced by researcher"s own biases. Standard is whether information comes from a peer-reviewed source- written and evaluated by experts in the field (e. g. research scientists) Challenges of sex research: nature of the content. Privacy of sexual behavior- renders discussion uncomfortable/observation difficult. People will freely discuss their criminal charges or past experiences in other areas, however discussing relationships and conversations around intercourse or contraception is not as widely accepted. Discomfort with the topic of sexual behavior produces high nonresponse rates to requests for participation in sex research. The people who are willing to engage into research on sexual behavior may be different than other members (most likely the majority) of the population. Random sample- group chosen in such a way that each member of the population has an equal chance of being selected.
