CYAF 471 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Tubal Ligation, Vas Deferens, Local Anesthesia
Document Summary
Breastfeeding - menstruation may be suppressed for as long as 18 months, but ovulation may return without warning. Hope - 85% of heterosexual couples of reproductive age not using contraception will experience pregnancy each year. Vas deferens are cut through small incision in scrotal sac, blocking passage of sperm. Done under local anesthesia in doctor"s office in under 20 min. Nearly 100% effective 0 does not reduce sex drive or function, few side effects. Vasovasostomy - surgical reversal of vasectomy; successful about 50% of the time. Female sterilization - significantly more complicated/risky than male methods. Tubal sterilization (tubal ligation) - cut is made in the fallopian tubes. Conducted in an operating room under general or local anesthesia. May, but commonly does not, require an overnight hospital stay. Transcervical sterilization (essure) - coils inserted into fallopian tubes, causing tissue growth. Does not require an operating room or general anesthesia. No longer available due to high rate of significant complications.
