Document Summary

What quantum #s describe electron in 4s hydrogen orbital? (n, l, m l, ms) n = 4 m = 0 l = 0. We successfully solved schrodinger eqn for h atom. This can be extended to all atoms w/ only 1 electron by including atomic # z. Now have 2 electrons and 2 protons to consider. Let"s say nucleus = fixed relative to position of electrons (reasonable assumption given that it"s much eavier). Our schrodinger eqn is: subscripts 1 and 2 relate to electron 1 and electron 2 del^2 = laplacian operator r = position of electron me = mass of electron. This term also means we can"t solve this diff eq. The models we"ve looked at up to until now (pib, harmonic oscillator, rigid rotor, h atom) represent nearly all of problems for which schrodinger eqn can be solved exactly. Luckily, we can use approx methods to get very accurate answers, for both multielectron atoms and molecules.
