PSY 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Attachment Theory
Document Summary
Temperament refers to the basic emotional disposition of a person. Thomas and chess categorized infants into 3 temperament types o o o. Easy children are happy, relaxed, and agreeable (40%) Difficult children are moody, easily frustrated, and over-reactive (10%) Slow-to-warm-up children are somewhat shy and withdrawn and take time to adjust to new situations (15%) Ainsworth noted 3 distinct categories of attachment evident in children in a strange situation o o o. Secure attachment infant stays close to mother, shows moderate distress when separated, and is happy when mother returns. Avoidant infant does not seek contact and does not cry when she leaves. Anxious/ambivalent infant is upset when mother leaves and angry when she returns. Infants learn either to trust the environment (if needs are met) or to mistrust it. Toddlers acquire self-confidence if they learn to regulate their bodies and act independently if they fail or are labeled as inadequate they experience shame and doubt.
