Document Summary

Health lecture 2: social determinants of health and public policy. Rather than individual health, overall health of a population: patterns, differences, inequalities. Everywhere in the u. s. , health indicators vary by social factors. The u. s. ranks poorly on health indicators compared to other developed countries. Health and healthcare are deceptive because they are different concepts: population health does not depend on better healthcare. The u. s. spends far more on health care per capita than other developed countries, but has a much lower life expectancy at birth: spending way more on health care investments and less on social expenditures. There are dramatic differences in health that are closely linked with degrees of social advantage. Economic stability: employment, income, expenses, debt, medical bills, support. Neighborhood and physical environment: housing, transportation, safety, parks, playgrounds, walkability. Education: literacy, language, early childhood education, vocational training, higher education. Community and social context: social integration, support systems, community engagement, discrimination.
