Direct fitness- when one"s behavior increases survival and reproduction. Cooperation- when one"s behavior increases survival and reproduction of another individual: agent/actor- individual performing the behavior, problem of cooperation. The benefit given to recipient could have been hoarded by agent. By spreading the benefit, the agent is failing to maximize its resources. Also provides a direct or indirect benefit to the agent. Indirect benefits are common when the agent is helping a relative kin selection: kin selection (indirect benefit) By doing this, the agent is passing on copies of its genes: inclusive fitness and mutualism. Inclusive fitness- sum of the direct and indirect fitness benefits. Mutual benefit- when the behavior benefits the actor and others: mutualism without kin discrimination. Young meerkats engage in social foraging" and adult helpers bring them food. Adults feed the pup that is (1) closest to them and (2) exhibiting begging calls. Relatedness/pup identity does not matter feed all of them.
