Stress has both psychological and physiological components. Stress : any circumstance that threatens or is perceived to threaten one"s well being. Incidences related to stress: frustration, conflict, change, pressure. Frustration : the pursuit of a goal is prevented. Conflict : two or more competing and incompatible goals occur. Also get frustrated when things don"t seem to be fair. Three general types of conflicts: desirable goals. Approach-approach conflicts : a choice must be made between two. Ex: choosing between a study abroad experience vs. internship, Avoidance-avoidance conflict : a choice must be made between two both are really good, but have to choose one. unattractive goals. Ex: don"t want to go to dentist but the tooth is hurting a lot. Either way you have to deal with something unpleasant. Approach-avoidance conflict : a choice must be made about to achieve a goal which has both positive and negative attributes. Ex: getting a google internship in ohio.
