Document Summary

Lecture 8: organization of the respiratory system & ventilation mechanics. Type 1 pneumocytes are the epithelial cells that cover ~90% of the alveolar surface. Type 2 pneumocytes are cells that secrete surfactant. Ciliated epithelial cells line the upper airways and move mucus toward the pharynx. Mucus secreting cells line the upper airway and secrete mucus. Increased mucus production with smoking paralyzes the cilia and gets clogged and have to forcefully cough up mucus. Intrapleural space: about 5-10 um thick and contains 5-10ml intrapleural fluid. Is a force pushing inward on the chest wall: prs= trans-respiratory pressure, pressure difference between alveolar p and atmospheric p, prs = palv patm, pressure that determines airflow. Boyle"s law: p1v1 = p2v2, pressure is inversely related to volume. Increase v without changing the amount of gas in the container: when volume of the container increases, the pressure in the container decreases. Questions to think about: air flow is bulk flow.
