NURS 220 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Maxilla, Sphenoid Bone, Lacrimal Bone
Document Summary
Fontanels-hyaline cartilage- soft spots in skull-where the bones have not fully come together during infancy. Foramen-holes in skull for nerves to run through so brain can send/receive messages from body (can be small, medium, or large sized). Fissure- slits (orbit of the eye)-holds eyes in bony sockets. Sinuses communicate by little pathways through opening in nose and mouth. Coronal suture-where parietal bone joins the frontal bone. Sagittal suture-where two parietal bones meet (forms a sagittal plane if cut on suture) Zygomatic process-area that interacts with cheek bone (sticks out) Styloid process-little bone that comes down and sticks out. Anchor for muscle that goes to the hyloid bone-moves during swallowing. Mastoid process: sinus-area behind opening for ear-little holes. Shaped so it can rock in the opening for the first vertebrae. Sphenoid: sinus: atlas 29, 31, 36, 42-(between temporal and cheek bone)-hold pituitary gland in indentation (called sella turcica)-most of bone is internal of skull-looks like a bat/butterfly.
