Document Summary

Ergonomics: understanding interactions between humans and other elements of a system and the profession that applies theory , principles and data to design in order to optimize human well-being and overall system performance. Hfe: goal is to make technology work for people. Considers cognitive, physical and organizational influences on human behavior. Focuses on enhancing safety, performance and satisfaction. Why we need it: high cost of capability-demand mismatches, worker expectations, legal requirements, moral and ethical responsibility. The two points in the design cycle where ergonomic solutions can be applied are after a problem, accident or incident has occurred (reactively) or at the beginning (proactively). Better to implement proactively so that issues can be identified and prevented. Task design: changing what operators do, rather than changing the devices used. Equipment design: changes the physical equipment people work with. Environmental design: changes the physical environment where tasks are carried out. Training: enhances skills/knowledge of people by prepping them for the job.
