Document Summary

People move to ports and cities to centers of production, some voluntary, some somewhere on the edge of voluntary rapid urban growth. Another effect of war is to increase pro-imperialism inside britain. 1916, the government shifts, up until this point liberal majority in parliament, liberal prime minister, liberal cabinet, halfway through war shifts to a coalition in part because by 1916 things are not going well. 1916 on there are conservatives in the cabinet, lloyd george is prime minister and a liberal. The conservatives who are now part of the government are hard core imperialists. During and then after the war the british government is more hard core imperialist. War had made it obvious how important and valuable an empire was. The war had provided a sustained demonstration of the value for britain to be able to extract goods, money, men and materials from the rest of the world.
