Erikson"s stages of ego development (look at paper given to you in class) How we develop psychologically (how did our sense of identity evolve) Ego the part of the mind which is consciously in contact with the outside world and is influenced by experiences of the world. Thought that development could continue past 65. It wasn"t until about the 80"s or 90"s that people really confronted aging. Erikson died while thinking about this so joan took over. She proposed that in the ninth stage the previously resolved crisis points are revisited. Gerotranscendence a new level of being. This idea was also proposed by swedish gerontologist, lars tornstan. Tornstan proposed his theory on the basis of qualitative and quantitative data from interviews conducted with people aged 52 to 97 years old. From these interviews he noticed a shift in perspective by satisfied elders away from materialistic and physical aspects of the world to a more internal focus.
