-Refers to a social “island” (from Italian term/def of ghetto) where people are segregated.
Began with Jews. Here talking about the Racial Ghetto=people segregated by race
(allthough there are subgroups within these larger groups of segregated ghettos. !
•Hyperghetto +prison (1968-present) more class inclusive patterns; more existent and more
depraved than what existed prior. !
Ghetto and hyperghetto are focus of this course. !
*Neglects Reconstruction Era-black politic. power & social progress alter civil war (1865-1877)!
#Jim Crow begins later-Plessy vs Ferguson Case (1896). !
Creole-culture (could look like anyone; wasn’t based on skin color & didn’t mean not black-
really based on tie to French Ancestry. !
New Jim Crow —> Felon disenfranchisement=lose some rights (once convicted)!
