In 1978/79 the iranians had enough, and there was a revolution and they got rid of the. This was the first islamic revolution: led by the mujahideen, they wanted to create a muslim state, they brought back a guy who had been in exile; khomenei. It had been there ally but not anymore: this led to another oil shock because iran withheld oil; created another economic crisis and great inflation. In 1979, iranian rebels/mujahideen stormed the us embassy and took the americans there hostage. Us and iran are now on a collision path. That would lead to big war in the middle east between iran and iraq. So us helped iraq defeat iran in 1988. Shares borders with iran, pakistan, and the old soviet union.
