Smaller family size (moving away from the use of child labor) More focus on preparing those fewer children on a different market environment. Women: dedicated more time to fewer children than previous generations. Changed labor response of labor and children. Development of a middle class family was seen mostly in northern and urban areas. For women this change of family dynamics led to a change of domestic responsibilities/labor as they worked towards creating a perfect home life -- to provide escape for when the man comes home from work. Lots of immigrant groups come to the us and particularly settle in the north where jobs were more available. Lots of change took place in this period of rapid social and economic change: fast-moving world, different languages, practicing different religions, lot of change. Accompanies with a certain religion revivalism (religion as a source of stability) This period of religious revivalism is known as the second great awakening.
