All sciences have 2 missions: discover the facts understand social facts, explain those facts (theory) Both are based on ideas that can be tested discovery. Research (and theory) consists of making testable claims about the world. E. g. the yearbook messages from the wider circle are less warm on average. Other researchers can do additional research to see if it holds up. If it does not hold up we can move on to other ideas, or build upon it. Testability (falsifiability) is what makes a science a science. Testability does not mean we have the final truth, but we know more this year than the last. Moral: should we abolish the death penalty. Aesthetic: are the irish the best-looking nation on earth. However we can research opinions on these. Values can influence what we study and how we study. But as long as we don"t make value judgements in our work, it is classified as scientific.
