The term is apt because such suffering is structured" by historically given (and often economically driven) processes and forces that conspire to constrain agency (freedom to have power over your life). For many, choices both large and small are limited by racism, sexism, political violence, and grinding poverty, paul farmer. Society is structurally violent toward certain types of people, and not others: to explain suffering from structural violence, one must understand the structure, which is not impersonal. Individual is within the culture, which is within the social environment that provides the structural boundary. Forms of structural violence: poverty, income inequality, racism and ethnic inequality, sexism and gender inequality, and warfare and political violence.
