Document Summary
The bottom line: short-lived phenomena can have social significance. In the summer of 1958, americans bought an estimated 25 million hula hoops; enough to give one to every child between the ages of 5-11. We associate fads with young people, with non-serious trivia. Toy fads:pet rocks, rubix cubes, cabbage patch kids, fidget spinners. Dance fads: the twist, line dancing, break dancing, etc. College fads: streaking; running naked across campus, phone booth stuffing; how many pledges can a frat get into a phone booth. Calling something a fad dismisses its importance (mitch miller- thought rock and roll was just a fad) Fads from around the 1920s: kewpie dolls, fake moles, ain"t we got fun, split sleeves at shoulders, men"s wrist watches. Men"s wrist watches were pocket watches; correct way to have a watch is to be properly dressed in a suit and stuff a watch in your pocket which was attached to a chain.
