Stigma: social stigma - mental illness portrayed in the general public, how its talked about. Dehumanization of people with an illness: perceived stigma/self-stigma - internalization of that social stigma. Psychodynamic model: 10% is conscious, 90% is subconscious. Thoughts, feelings, experiences are on the outside of awareness: abnormal behavior is due to a conflict among underlying, unconscious psychological forces. Dynamic between forces of our mind outside of our conscious awareness. Understanding trauma especially in early childhood has influenced this psychodynamic theory: behavior determined by past experiences, (psychosexual stages, id, ego, and superego - way of understanding the processes of the mind. Id - immediate satisfaction, all about drives or needs or wants. Superego - moral regulation, whats right and wrong, operates as conscious. Recognizing the role of the self: object-relations - prioritizes need for relationships, connection. Understand ourselves and relationships with others by looking at relationship with primary caregivers.
