Typically we predict changes in one variable to affect another variable. Dependent variable- the characteristic that we predict is going to change. Variable that is measured or recorded in an experiment. Independent variable- characteristic we think is responsible for the change. Variable experimenter manipulates as a basis for making predictions about the dependent. External validity: degree to which a study"s participants, stimuli, and procedures adequately reflect the world as it variable actually is.
