Power and security are related concepts/ideas: but not the same > more complex, international politics, like all politics, is a struggle for power. Whatever the ultimate goal of intl politics, power is always the intermediate one ; survival matters bc it gives you power and then you can move on. State pov: to be secure is to have power and to hav empower is to be secure: but to have power is also insecurity bc power is a zero-sum game. Ex: we want to bring ukraine into nato, but russia sees this as their insecurity so they bold more weapons to feel more secure, which threatens our security > security dilemma. 1st dimension: coercion: when a gets b to do something b would not otherwise do. Ex: dr. ellerby making us take exam on wednedsay: how? ntl security strategies. Tangible/hard power: have more stuff like guns, bodies, money= capabilities >coercive power, be rule maker.
