POSC150 Lecture Notes - Lecture 33: Direct Lobbying In The United States, Supermajority
Document Summary
Something to remember: we are the only developed capitalist democracy that has so many guns and gun-related deaths in the world. Interpreting the second amendment: you would think it"s clear but actually a lot of dispute. Wanted to make sure military would not be able to turn on the country. The right of the people to keep and bear arms : ways to read this. Collective right belongs to militias based on the first part of the amendment. If you ignore the first part, it is the individual right belonging to all people: for like 200 years it was a collective right but then in 2008 this shifted and was made an individual right. The american public: ie public opinion on gun control, people generally have little interest in or knowing about politics. There is much more interest in gun laws after mass shootings. Gun owners are more involved than non-owners. Guns are a shortcut for low information voters.
