Families are social systems; thus nurses can learn much from a systems approach. Family is greater than the sum of its parts - it"s hierarchical: theories for working with families in the community, family systems theory, family development and life cycle theory. Focuses on predicted stresses of families as they change and transition over time. Families that are in the childbirth phase - that"s part of their life cycle. Areas in health promotion, health protection, preventative services, and describing age-related objectives - really important to nursing. Includes areas of health promotion with physical activity, fitness, nutrition, decreasing tobacco use, decreasing the use of alcohol and drugs, and family planning. Talks about mental health disorders and helping people.
