Document Summary

Roots of the imperial crisis: the perils of victory (more empire, more problems) Colonists begin pushing west illegally over the proclamation line. Almost like squatters on this land - the colonists aren"t supposed to be there. British debt doubled after the seven years war. 1760s - ministers get put in charge to tighten control on the massive empire. British tighten restrictions - colonists do not like this. Ran out of space in barracks, housed soldiers who needed a place to stay. Doing a lot of illegal trading with the caribbean, now have to keep more records of their trading. Not the money that is the issue, its the control. Anything with paper was taxed - newspapers, marriage certificates. Had to affix a stamp on it to say it was taxed. Colonists saw this as a direct tax, not an indirect tax. Indirect - sugar (only have to pay if you trade sugar)
