Japan created a ton of rice, also fish and seafood. Sea acted as protection - not domainated by mainland. Could develop their own culture without a lot of military/political influence from the mainland. 12th century - emperor had less and less influence on politics. Real power in the land - not the emperor. Responsible for administering lands of behald of the shogun and smperor. Suggested that everything had to be sacrificed to the honor of the warrior. Family and loved ones were less important than honor and trust. Greatest expression of honor was to seek death in the service of ones lord. By the 16th century, the japanese central govt had lost all control over the daimyo. Daimyo were fighting eachother for control over the country. Toward the end, the govt began to bring them under control. Govt tried to make all levels of sociery make sacrifices for the greater good.
