• They are a component of most national or regional strategies for conservation
• A requirement of various agreements/conventions
• IUCN classification of protected areas
o Category 1a: strict nature reserves (research)
▪ No recreation, camping or hiking allowed
▪ Hakgala strict nature reserve
• Sri lanka cloud forest
• Toque macaque
o Endemic and endangered
o Category 1b: wilderness areas
▪ Focused on conservation but allows primitive recreation
▪ Primary focus on biodiversity, ecosystem, processes/services
▪ Allegheny islands wilderness
• Critically endangered: club shell muscle
o Category 2: National Parks
▪ Denali national park
▪ Dual mandate: ecosystem and recreation
o Category 3: national monuments
▪ Natural features and recreation
• Smaller scale than parks

▪ Not always focused on natural landscapes
