Poor schools came up to pull these children and get them educated= charity schools : creates a stigma, effort to change schools to make them more attractive for a wider range. Whig party = active party of gov"t. Immigrants in cities: we"re not good parents? : although many say it"s good. Catholics oppose the public schools: b/c they use protestant bible, wanted to form their own schools. Southerners: feel they don"t need to encourage widespread literacy; that might encourage the slaves, or even the poor white people. Small school houses, especially in the south: brick, steeple, one room, challenge: finding a way to heat the room. Lofty goals: people look to common schools to do many wonderful things, make everything better, save them from poverty and vice. In recent years, more schools not mandatory attendance. By 1830s/ 40s, begin to see separate women"s colleges.
